A Year in Bees

Welcome!

A note for Teachers and Parents:  I've been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to develop a study of bees for elementary aged school kids that can be used in the home school or traditional classroom.  My goal is to offer a cursory view of the marvelous world of the honey bee and how she interacts with the world around her.  I intend to keep the focus and lessons geared primarily toward the 8 – 12 year old but will intersperse links to more scientific and adult level material throughout.

Inasmuch as you've found this page it is safe to assume that you now realize that we have a small family farm.  Sharon and I will document as best we can, with the resources available to us, the role that the honey bee plays in the gardens, pasture land and orchards here on the Rose of Sharon.

Documenting a Year in Bee's is a challenging project and not one that I feel I can do alone.  There will be many talented bee keepers whom will be adding thoughts and ideas to these pages.  You too, are encouraged ( as are your students or children ) to add your suggestions or ask your questions by using the e-mail link back to us.  Your input and questions are welcomed!

The Year in Bees is dedicated to some Great Kids and Teachers at the R. E. Bennett elementary school in Chehalis, Washington.  I 've been welcomed with open arms by the faculty, staff and students throughout this spring as I bring a small bit of nature into their classrooms in my capacity as a Lewis County, Washington Master Gardener.

I hope to engage your small ones in a wide eyed look at the fascinating honey bee; perhaps you too, will become addicted.  We'd love to hear from your kids and/or classrooms by e-mail as you feel it appropriate.

If you'd like to help teach along with us at home or in your classrooms I've included a few links to some exceptional Bee sites on the web for your study and, more thorough science.

Tennessee Beekeepers Association  - With fabulous teaching papers by George Imirie.

Beemaster  - In my opinion, far and away the best hobbyist/light science site on the web.

Bee Source  - An invaluable compendium of bee related knowledge in simple format.
