Now for your viewing pleasure we present:

Making a mess with apples

The tale of the two little pigs (the wolf got the other one - just kidding ;-} )

1st experiment in juicing!!

This year was our first attempt at putting many of our apples to good use. Using our new apple press we jumped in and made a mess. Obviously, before you can make juice you need something to make juice from so here we are . . .

I'm Picking . . .

Sharon is picking . . .

Even Beauregard is picking . . .

And the fruit of our labors, well actually we're just getting started . . .

Here I'm cranking away . . .

and cranking away . . .

All told, this year we put up 30 quarts of apple sauce, 20 pints of apple butter, 20 lbs of dehydrated apples and over 30 gallons of fresh juice in the freezer. 10 gallons of the fresh juice went directly into hard cider production…so far so good, will let you know.

Learning from this years attempt I can see already how we need to arrange our schedule and processing next year.

Newest residents on the farm, meet Porky and Bess
These two Yorkshire x Chester White piglets came live amongst us ( for a very short while ) on the 1st of October, 2006. We were asked to keep a visual record of their growth and doings. Pigs are every bit as engaging as the stories you may have heard.  They love to play with us, Beauregard, the Golden Retriever and even the cat.  Here they are 8 weeks old.

The second picture is them doing their favorite thing . . . at 12 weeks old.  They have a singular focus ( food ) that is really funny to watch.

Sharon has become their best friend in that she gives them fresh spinach from the garden.  Let me tell you, they'll do backflips for fresh spinach.

Notice in the first picture how nice the grass is in their 32' x 32' pen.  I had been told to expect they'd tear it up but I had no idea how good they are as rototillers . . . every square inch of their pen is tilled at least 5 inches deep.

More pictures in 4 weeks.
